Activities
- Disability Day (D – Day) on 3rd December every year
SHIVYAWATA takes a leading role in organizing the international Disability day (D – Day) commemorations each year in Tanzania. The International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of Disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well being of Persons With Disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be delivered from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
- Campaigns against Albino Killings
Tanzania Albino Society (TAS) in collaboration with SHIVYAWATA have been engaged in aggressive advocacy in a bid to ending killings against Persons with Albinism. Since December 2013, there have been about 124 attacks reported in Tanzania of which 72 cases involved killings, while 35 involved chopping body parts and the rest 17 exhuming their graves on the belief that certain body parts of Persons With Albinism possess magical powers to make the users rich or successful. These evil practices are notorious in mining and fishing sectors.
Projects
- Handicap International (H.I) – From Rights to Inclusion
SHIVYAWATA is currently implementing the “From rights to Inclusion project” in collaboration with the Handicap International. The Project aims at moving forward the protection of rights for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities (CRPD) in Kenya and Tanzania national legislations. The project objectives are;
- To promote the implementation of the CRPD through strengthening grassroots, national and regional capacities and linkages with other organizations.
- To strengthen capacities of DPOs to advocate for the implementation of the CRPD.
- To institutionalize civil participation for the implementation of the CRPD.
- Tanzania Disability Consortium on New Constitution
SHIVYAWATA is bringing together twelve DPOs from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar with a view to advocating for Inclusion of needs and Issues of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the New Constitution making. The project started in August 2012 and will end by July 2015. One of its major achievements include; influencing nomination of the 20 members with Disabilities in the constituent assembly by the President Of United Republic of Tanzania 2014.
- Modeling Inclusive Education
SHIVYAWATA in collaboration with Action on Disability and Development International (ADD) and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MOEVT) are jointly carrying out a five year project effective September 2013, on Modeling Inclusive Education in four District Councils in the coast region whereby school going age children with special needs are enrolled to start schooling with the emphasis of making use of the MOEVT Inclusive education strategy which calls for an inclusive setting.
- EDAN & SHIVYAWATA
SHIVYAWATA worked together with the Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network – EDAN in partnership with Finish Evangelical Lutheran Mission (FELM). EDAN has been implementing a three year project on Advocacy for the promotion of Rights and Equalization of Opportunities for Persons With Disability (APREPWD) in the five East African Countries (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda).
The project took off in July 2011, ending in June 2014. One of the projects componests in achieving its set objectives is to organize a series of exchange visits by representatives of Disabled People Organizations within the project countries, with the aim of information and experience sharing on disability issues, learn from best practices and strengthening networking amongst organizations of persons with disabilities.
Research
- World Bank survey
SHIVYAWATA has conducted an impact assessment survey on behalf of Bank Information Centre USA (BICUSA) from June to September 2014 in five district hospitals of Tanzania which were; Tumbi and Kisarawe – Coast region; Kilwa – Lindi Region; Kilosa – Morogoro region and Korogwe DISTRICT hospital – Tanga region.
The survey aimed at assessing involvement and impact of the World Bank-sponsored project “Tanzania – Basic Health Services Project” to Persons with Disabilities in Tanzania. The specific objective of this study was to determine how much the project has mainstreamed or left aside the medical requirements of Persons with Disabilities and suggest the best way to engage Persons with Disabilities in all essential steps of project planning and implementation.
- ICRC Survey
SHIVYAWATA and the International Committee for Red Cross (ICRC) through Special Fund for Disabilities – SFD signed a five year MoU on December 2013 to 2018 to collaborate in the following key areas; ensuring wider access to rehabilitation services in Tanzania, promote the implementation of UNCRPD and improving the living standards of PWDs through supporting socio-economic activities.
To this end therefore, between June to October 2014, SHIVYAWATA undertook a survey in 5 regions of Tanzania namely Dar es salaam, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Dodoma and Mbeya. The purpose of the assignment was to assess the positive and negative impacts derived from the use of assistive devices to Persons with Disabilities and to understand better the barriers to access rehabilitation services and propose an adequate strategy to ICRC/SFD, donors and Government on improving quality and access to rehabilitation services in the country.
