Background History
The Tanzania Federation of Organizations of Persons with Disability (SHIVYAWATA) is a national umbrella body founded in 1992 to unite and amplify the voices of persons with disabilities. It brings together 12 member organizations, including groups for individuals with physical, sensory, intellectual, and psychosocial disabilities.
SHIVYAWATA champions the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Tanzania, driving change in education, health, employment, gender equality, social protection, and policy to create a more inclusive society.
The Federation is a mouthpiece for matters pertaining to People with Disabilities (PWDs). The essence of having the Federation was to afford a larger, lauder and common voice on issues of lobbying and advocacy and mainly on cross-cutting issues such as LEGISLATION, POLICIES, EDUCATION, HEALTH, EMPLOYMENT, SOCIAL PROTECTION, GENDER and many other similar issues issues leading to social change and practice responsive to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
