The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities were announced to be launched in the year 1992, the declaration of the UN General Assembly - Resolution 47/3. Day, aimed at raising awareness of disability issues and mobilize support for the appreciation of nature, the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities. Yanalengo also raise awareness of the benefits to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life, including political, Social, economic and cultural.
Since 2009, Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, introduced the film festival as part of events at Headquarters of the United Nations to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The United Nations Enabled Film Festival (UNEFF) including short films with the content of Persons with Disabilities issues related to the diagnosis on the context and gushing messages promoting awareness of disability issues and to promote effective participation of people with disabilities in society.
Celebration of International Day of People with Disabilities Date 03 December 2014 Iringa yalifana where Mh.William Lukuvi, who was guest of honor at the celebration as he addressed the crowd, including government officials, stakeholders from various social organisations, people with / without disabilities who have all joined together to commomerate the Disability Day each year on 03 December, nationally and internationally.
Hon.William Lukuvi message in these celebrations focused on four main aspects to consider the role of the Day of Atonement for this year 2014 which is ;
Sustainable Development: The promise of technology.
Hon.William Lukuvi message of the day focused on the following issues;
1.All Construction contracts of infrastructure in Tanzania must meet the needs of people with disabilities as well as architects, engineers and contractors all should assure the implementation of the Government's infrastructure needs .
2. Technological development also needs to be complied with persons with disabilities example buses have doors "automatic" for people with disabilities, the use of computers based on the needs of people with disabilities, construction of healthy service laboratories have centered infrastructure needs of people with disabilities, etc.
3. Government through the power of communication (TCRA) has to make sure there are interpreters of sign language in television programs and discussion on this goes if the government's aim is to see that every TV has hired interpreters of sign language.
4. Calls have been made for the public not to discriminate against people with disabilities instead should ensure that persons with disabilities have access to all of the fundamental rights to equality with others in the community .
